Accra, Ghana – In observance of International Women’s Day on March 8, the UK chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Leeds has released a flyer announcing a virtual leadership forum titled “The Role of Women in our Contemporary Nation-Building and Politics.” The forum features Ghana’s former Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, as one of the keynote speakers. According to the flyer, the event has been scheduled for Sunday, March 9, 2025, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm (UK time).
The flyer prominently displays Abubakar alongside fellow speaker Ophelia Mensah Hayford, with Ghana’s national colours and the NPP logo. Its design emphasises the theme of empowerment, leadership and female engagement in governance.
In comments reported on International Women’s Day 2024, Abubakar called for the creation of an environment in which women can thrive and be heard, noting: “The examples that we have to give, the dynamics, and the perspectives that we bring to the table are so important… but too many women are bright, very sound, very collected… yet afraid of the space.”
The Leeds-based event aims to open up discussions around how women can contribute more actively to national development and politics, especially in contemporary Ghanaian society. Participants are expected to explore leadership challenges, strategies for inclusion, and pathways to empower young women across diasporic and Ghanaian contexts.
