  • Full name: Fatimatu Abubakar.
  • Date of birth: 16 September 1986 (Kumasi, Ashanti Region).  
  • Background: Grew up in the Moshie Zongo area of Kumasi; attended local primary school before secondary education at Kumasi Academy.  

Education


  • First degree: Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & English Language, University of Ghana, Legon (attended in the late 2000s; she held student leadership roles—Vice-President, Akuafo Hall JCR — around 2008).  
  • Law degree / professional training: LLB studies (reported at Mountcrest University College) and completed professional training at the Ghana School of Law. Called to the Ghana Bar — December 2020 (graduation/call ceremony reported 18 Dec 2020).  

Early career (private sector & campaign work)


  • Worked at Lansdown Resort (Aburi) as House Manager and at SRM Engineering Ltd (clerk) before full-time political appointments.  
  • Active on Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo campaign teams (2016 & 2020) and served on Akufo-Addo’s legal team for the 2020 election petition.

Public service & political career — timeline (year ranges)


  • Jan 2017 — (appointment noted 22 Feb 2017): Deputy Communications Director, Office of the President (Flagstaff/ Jubilee House). This role placed her inside the Presidency communications apparatus and is the starting point of her national political profile.  
  • June 2021 – May 2024 (approx): Deputy Minister for Information (Ministry of Information) — nominated and served as Deputy Information Minister beginning June 2021.  
  • 14 Feb 2024 (nomination) → 19 May 2024 (Parliamentary approval) → May 2024 – Jan 7, 2025 (term end with change of government): Minister for Information, Republic of Ghana.

  • Nominated by President Nana Akufo-Addo as substantive Minister for Information on 14 Feb 2024(succeeding Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah).  
  • Parliament approved a list of ministerial nominees (including her) in May 2024 (list published 19 May 2024).  
  • She served throughout the remainder of the Akufo-Addo administration and into the official handover period; the Akufo-Addo presidency ended when John Dramani Mahama was sworn in on 7 January 2025. Ministers of the outgoing government typically cease in their official capacities when the new president’s nominees are sworn in. I could not find a source showing she was retained in Mahama’s incoming ministerial line-up.  

  • Key responsibilities & public actions as Information Minister


    • Led the Ministry’s public-information outreach, conducted regional town-hall style engagements, and repeatedly urged the media to verify information to prevent misinformation and national embarrassment. (Examples: media-tour articles and public statements in 2024.)
